Cognitive Behavior Therapy for Depression and Anxiety

Workshop Level I for Students and Faculty

Learn the fundamentals of cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) through an experiential workshop under the direction of Judith Beck, Ph.D. The three-day Level I workshop focuses on CBT for depression and anxiety in adults and adolescents. There are three differences from our regular Level I workshop: (1) no CE credits will be included; (2) this workshop is offered at a special rate for graduate students and faculty members; and (3) an hour long question and answer seminar with Dr. Aaron Beck is planned.

Day 1: Cognitive Behavior Therapy for Depression

  • Introduction and overview of CBT
  • The cognitive model of depression
  • Conceptualizing individual clients
  • Planning treatment
  • Engaging the patient and developing the therapeutic alliance
  • Setting goals
  • Experiential exercises

Day 2: CBT for Depression (part 2) and Suicidality

  • Structuring sessions
  • Identifying and responding to automatic thoughts and beliefs
  • Behavioral activation
  • Homework
  • Specialized techniques for suicidal clients
  • Question and answer session with Dr. Aaron Beck

Day 3: CBT for Anxiety

  • The cognitive model of anxiety
  • Exposure principles
  • Anxiety treatment: Experiential group exercises

Trainees are awarded a letter verifying participation in this program.
