Cognitive Behavior Therapy for Personality Disorders and Challenging Problems Core 3

Info

Led by Judith S. Beck, Ph.D. and Amy Cunningham, Psy.D., this advanced-level workshop is designed for mental health professionals who have mastered the basics of CBT with “easier” clients and want to enhance their ability to deliver CBT efficiently and effectively to clients who present with more complicated problems. Patients with complex difficulties and/or personality disorders often don’t respond to “standard” CBT and pose special difficulties in treatment. They may, for example, fail to fully engage in treatment, continually miss sessions, feel hopeless or stuck, become angry with their therapist, engage in self-harm, use substances, blame others, avoid homework, experience continual crises, call their therapist (too often) between sessions, demand special treatment—the list of challenges that arise in session and between sessions could go on and on.

Through didactic instruction, case discussions, DVDs by master clinicians, supervised roleplaying, and other hands-on learning experiences, attendees of this workshop will learn how to quickly conceptualize why clients engage in these “coping” strategies and then specifically, what to do. They’ll learn how to effectively implement and vary the basic structural elements of CBT, and how to develop, maintain, and use the therapeutic alliance to achieve therapeutic goals. They’ll learn specific techniques to use in challenging cases, as well as how to use CBT techniques on themselves when clients’ behaviors trigger their own core beliefs. *The third day of the workshop will focus on CBT for borderline personality disorder. Participants are encouraged to prepare or have in mind difficult cases for discussion or role play. A feature of the workshop is a special question and answer and role-play session with Dr. Aaron Beck.

Cognitive Behavior Therapy for Substance Abuse Specialty Workshop

Info

Patients who present with substance abuse problems are a highly heterogeneous group in terms of co-morbid problems, the range of substances used, personal resources, pre-morbid functioning, and readiness for change. Nonetheless, these patients often have important factors in common, such as difficulties in managing cravings and urges, faulty beliefs that perpetuate their abuse of substances, mood instability, and fluctuations between feeling “in control” of their problems and feeling hopeless and desperate. This workshop presents evidence-based, cognitive behavioral methods for helping substance-abusing patients improve their motivation to change, identify and moderate their drug-use-related beliefs, manage their cravings more effectively, improve their mood states via self-help methods, and utilize a range of adaptive skills (e.g., rational responding, honest communication).

This experiential workshop covers the essentials of cognitive behavior therapy for mental health professionals who treat substance abuse disorders. Under the direction of Judith S. Beck, Ph.D., and led by Cory F. Newman, Ph.D., participants will learn how to:

  • Conceptualize clients’ dysfunctional substance use via the cognitive model;
  • Identify, evaluate, and moderate patients' dysfunctional substance-use-related beliefs (including "permission-giving" beliefs);
  • Integrate cognitive-behavioral principles with 12-step ideas and values;
  • Combine confrontational methods with a collaborative, congenial spirit;
  • Apply a range of cognitive-behavioral techniques to help patients choose not to use substances, even when they experience cravings or otherwise wish to self-medicate;
  • Address co-morbid problems such as mood disorders and anxiety disorders;
  • Conduct CBT for substance abuse in a group format.

Techniques for treating substance abuse will be illustrated through video, roleplays and worksheets. A special feature is a question and answer session with Dr. Aaron Beck.

Cognitive Behavior Therapy for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Specialty Workshop

Info

The incidence of posttraumatic stress disorder in the general population is as high as 8%, and in the active military and veteran population as high as 17%.  Given the impact of PTSD on individuals and families affected by this condition, dissemination and implementation of effective treatments is a high priority.  Under the direction of Judith S. Beck, Ph.D., and led by Aaron Brinen, Psy.D., this Beck Institute specialty workshop will cover cognitive behavioral therapies which result in remission or a decrease in the severity of PTSD and the accompanying depressive and anxious symptoms.  Participants will learn exposure techniques and other skills specifically developed to aid survivors in accessing salient trauma information, understanding his or her reactions and achieving a realistic perspective on the traumatic event.  An in-depth explanation and illustration of prolonged exposure, a primary intervention for PTSD, will be included, as well as cognitive techniques for imaginal revisiting of the trauma memory.  Role-plays and other experiential exercises will be conducted throughout.

Teaching and Supervising CBT A Workshop for Graduate Faculty

Info

Competent CBT therapists must know both what CBT is (theory, empirically supported protocols, models of therapy, etc.) as well as how to do CBT, effectively, creatively, and reliably. The way in which therapists achieve competency is in large part due to their graduate education and training. It is essential, therefore, that the process of teaching and training, as well as the content, be evidence-based. Under the direction of Judith S. Beck, Ph.D., and led by Randy Fingerhut, Ph.D. and Donna Sudak, M.D., graduate faculty will learn how to employ evidence-based strategies to improve CBT teaching and supervision, how to identify key learning needs and micro skills for CBT training, and how to effectively provide feedback to students and trainees. Using concepts from the field of adult learning, this workshop will review the most effective methods of teaching CBT, explore venues of learning, discuss the use of technology in learning, and provide teaching and training resources. The workshop will also address faculty development, program development (including coordination of training elements within a program), and processes of student/trainee evaluation. Experiential exercises will be conducted throughout. Participants are encouraged to bring any CBT training materials they are currently using.

This workshop will feature a special question and answer and role-play session with Dr. Aaron Beck.
