Extramural Program for Residency Training Directors & Supervisors
What's Involved:
  • Two 2-Day Trainings in Six Months
  • Weekly Review of Audiotapes/CDs
  • Weekly Intensive Supervision via telephone

Applicants must hold at least a Master's degree in a mental health, medical, or related field. Participants attend two 2-day workshops in Philadelphia and receive six months of weekly intensive supervision sessions via phone. (If travel is a hardship, please contact us.)

Initially, participants learn to conduct cognitive therapy or enhance their cognitive therapy skills. They send a 45-minute audiotape or CD of a psychotherapy session to their Beck Institute Supervisor, who reviews the tape/CD in its entirety and then holds a 45-minute phone supervision session. Supervision focuses on how to conceptualize patients according to a cognitive formulation, how to plan treatment, how to use a variety of strategies to meet therapeutic goals (while developing and maintaining a strong therapeutic alliance), how to monitor and measure patient progress, and how to combine cognitive therapy and psychopharmacology. Once participants have reached competency, they send their supervisor a weekly audiotape/CD of a presentation to residents, a supervision session with residents, and/or a therapy session conducted by a resident. Weekly telephone supervision with the Beck Institute supervisor then includes feedback on the tape/CD and other topics chosen by the participant: tailoring a cognitive behavior training program to his/her institution, using the Cognitive Therapy Rating Scale (to assess residents' competence and to enhance their therapy), improving instruction to and supervision of residents, and/or discussing research, theoretical, and other issues.

Supervision for advanced participants will be individualized according to their needs and goals. The six month program can be extended, if desired.

The six-month program is $4,550, payable in two installments. Tuition includes the cost of lunch at Extramural 2-Day Workshops. A $300 deposit is due upon signing the contract. Training fees are payable by check or credit card (Mastercard or Visa). Applicants who apply online will be able to submit credit card payments through our secure online system. Training fees are only refundable in special circumstances. Trainees are responsible for expenses of express mail for tape/CD delivery, phone calls, and travel and lodging for the two workshops in Philadelphia. Following successful completion of the extramural program (as demonstrated by Cognitive Therapy Rating Scale scores) trainees receive a certificate from the Beck Institute. Trainees who do not qualify for a certificate will receive a letter stating the number of hours they participated in the extramural program, and are encouraged to continue.

The Institute for the Advancement of Human Behavior in joint sponsorship with the Beck Institute for Cognitive Therapy and Research presents Extramural Training Programs. This program is available for 12 CE/CME credit hours per workshop. The Beck Institute offers CE/CME credit hours for a fee. Please contact us for more information. Please refer to the accreditation information page for more information on specific state and national board approvals. Participants must attend 100% of the activity for credit; no partial credit is accepted.
