Extramural Program for Therapists & Supervisors (U.S. & Canada)

Extramural Training Programs are available from your home city (U.S. or Canada) for:

  • Psychologists
  • Psychiatrists
  • Advanced Practice Psychiatric Nurses/Psychiatric Nurse Educators/Preceptors
  • Licensed Social Workers
  • Licensed/Certified Counselors
  • Physicians and Nurses

Upcoming Extramural Workshops:

  • January 26 - 27, 2009
  • May 4 - 5, 2009
  • October 19 - 20, 2009

For U.S. and Canadian participants, the basic Extramural Training Program of the Beck Institute for Cognitive Therapy and Research is an individualized, highly intensive program with weekly phone supervision after submitting weekly tapes or CDs of therapy sessions to your appointed Beck Institute supervisor. Applicants must hold at least a Master's degree in a mental health, medical, or closely related field. Participants may elect to have supervision on their own patients throughout the program, or once they reach competency in cognitive therapy, they may elect to learn how to supervise other therapists.

While the intensive, weekly one-year program is highly recommended, applicants with appropriate experience/background may request a variation of the program that is scheduled weekly for six months. Individuals who wish to become cognitive therapy supervisors must enroll for a minimum of a year's training. We recommend that applicants begin their training with one of our on-site, two-day workshops. If applicants would like to begin training prior to a scheduled workshop, special arrangements can be made.

These training opportunities are under the direction of Aaron T. Beck, M.D., and Judith S. Beck, Ph.D., and the programs provide high quality, state-of-the-art training in cognitive therapy to mental health professionals at beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels of expertise. Rolling admissions are available.

Begun in 1982 at the University of Pennsylvania, our Extramural programs have trained hundreds of clinicians across the entire spectrum of mental health providers, including those who work in both inpatient and outpatient settings, with many participants choosing to continue with additional training to deepen their understanding of and specialization in cognitive therapy.

    What's Involved:

Trainees meet in Philadelphia for two-day workshops specifically designed for their level. The workshops include videotapes of cognitive therapy sessions, didactic presentations, role-play demonstrations, and experiential exercises to provide immediate application of learning. If travel is a hardship, please contact us.

The other key component of the training program is ongoing supervision by Beck Institute faculty of cases that trainees are treating in their home cities. Clinicians obtain in-depth feedback and guidance on the application of cognitive therapy to their particular setting. Trainees are assigned a supervisor with expertise in their area of interest to whom they send a 45-minute audiotape or CD of a therapy session each week. The supervisor reviews the tape/CD in its entirety. The trainee then places a phone call to the appointed supervisor who conducts a 45-minute weekly supervision session by phone with the trainee.

    Weekly phone supervision includes:

    • Attention to the trainees' individual goals
    • Conceptualization of the patient
    • Treatment planning
    • Instruction on specific techniques and interventions
    • Generalization of skills learned to other cases
    • Other issues, as requested (e.g., research, teaching, supervision)
Participants who wish to become cognitive therapy supervisors additionally continue with the following supervision training: Once participants have reached competency in cognitive therapy, they send their Beck Institute supervisor a weekly audiotape or CD of a supervision session with other therapists, and/or a therapy session conducted by a therapist-in-training. Weekly telephone supervision with the Beck Institute supervisor then includes feedback on the tape/CD and other topics chosen by the participant, such as tailoring a cognitive behavior training program to his/her institution, using the Cognitive Therapy Rating Scale (to assess other therapists' competence and to enhance their therapy), improving instruction to and supervision of therapists, and/or discussing research, theoretical, and other issues. Supervision for advanced participants will be individualized according to their needs and goals.
