Feedback from Extramural Fellows
by Andrew C. Butler, Ph.D., Research Coordinator (p. 2,5)

Beck Institute encourages all of our trainees to ask their patients for feedback during their therapy sessions in order to collaboratively guide therapy in the most fruitful direction. Applying this principle of feedback at the programmatic level, we recently conducted a survey of past trainees in our Extramural Training Program. The responses were both encouraging and helpful--and we thank all those trainees who took time to respond to our survey.

We sent out a total of 103 questionnaires and got 55 back. Former trainees responded to six questions using a 5-point Likert scale from 0 "Not at all" to 4 "A lot". The vast majority of responses to these questions fell into the last two categories: "A moderate amount" and "A lot."

16% 84% To what degree was the program of overall usefulness?
25% 69% How much has what you learned influenced your clinical work, teaching/supervision, or research work?
18% 80% How responsive was your supervisor to your needs and goals?
27% 61% How useful were the weekend workshops?
11% 80% How useful were the supervision phone calls?
27% 62% How important was it that your supervisor listened to entire therapy tapes you sent?

We also asked former trainees to describe the positive aspects of the program as well as aspects that could use improvement. Here are some typical comments.

Positive aspects:

  • Detailed feedback on work samples during phone supervisions.
  • Very close attention to the process of the therapy sessions.
  • Attention to my specific needs.
  • Workshops were extraordinarily well organized.
  • The breadth of subject matter covered.
  • Updates on various aspects of CT.
  • The chance to meet and get to know other therapists and dialogue about CT.

Suggestions for improvement:

  • Online distribution of handouts or manuals.
  • Periodic written feedback to supervisees.
  • Do more weekend workshops, or extend them to three days.
  • Taper supervision over a three-year period.
  • Provide more guidance on appropriate reading.
  • Use even more videotape demonstrations.

The feedback has already been useful in helping us to continue providing the best possible training in state-of-the-art cognitive therapy.
